Seeing as though Julian Hayden was the town Sheriff, he gained great respect and authority, leaving the Hayden family with a very powerful name. The Hayden name is a symbol of power and control. The reasoning’s behind the power of the name, which David stated throughout the book was his Grandfather being wealthy and powerful. The Hayden name was powerful due to Julian and Wes enforcing the law, his uncle treating the sick and injured, and because all of the Hayden wives were beautiful. Julian Hayden, the father of Frank and Wes Hayden had an immense amount of control over his sons by being their father, but he also had control over many people in the town. His popularity and respect enabled him to gain the power and authority which he prided himself on.
Frank had power over many people seeing as he was the town doctor, and he was very respected and popular due to his serving in the war, being labeled as a ‘war hero’. Wes and Gail also gained a large amount of control when Wes took on his fathers job of being the town sheriff. This enabled him to gain respect also. The overall Hayden name has a great amount of power and status throughout their town because of their status of enforcing the law and healing the sick for generations.
The use of power the Hayden's have on the town include, Wesley Hayden: Being the sheriff of the entire community gained him power over all lawful sins of the people. Julian Hayden, a retired sheriff who served many years and has respect of all people in the county through his occupations and deeds over the years, and Frank Hayden as a doctor who is also considered a war hero, and is loved by many people of the county. Julian was a very controlling man, especially over Wes and Frank. He knew that no one could tell him what to do nor talk over him, he could basically get anything he wanted just because of the power he held and created himself; and he loved to show it off. Julian is a very powerful man, no one opposes him, which is how he established the Hayden dynasty. Many people became Julian's victims throughout the text, including his own family. Wes felt as though he couldn't even consider saying no when Julian offered the job of being town sheriff. Julian is the tough guy in the book. The wild west cowboy. He is rude and very disrespectful, treating the Indians with complete bigotry and thinking nothing of it. He feels are though he is superior to everyone else, especially women. He believes they need to be told what to do and treats them as the weaker sex.
Power comes with great responsibility, and by using the power wrongly can conclude in danger. Frank Hayden abused his power by molesting his Indian patients, just because he knew he could, and get away with it. He knew that if he spoke to people about it they would believe him over the Indian race anyway. This demonstrates the amount of power in which the Hayden name had over the town.

"...But our name was no joke. We were as close as Mercer county came to aristocracy. I never consciously traded on the Hayden name, yet I knew it gave me a measure of respect that I didn't have to earn." (Watson p. 126)
